Focus of the Akuapem Campus Programmes

English

The programme offers courses that meet educational, economic, social and political challenges of Ghana and other countries using English as a second language. It also offers students the requisite language/literary skills to make them effective in their job situation and to pursue future career objectives.

French

The programme will enable the student to carry out normal conversation with users of the language as first, second or foreign language; to read the literature and express themselves in written French without constant visit to the dictionary; and to understand and appreciate the literary history and the culture of French people.

Akan

At the end of the degree programme in Akan, the graduate should be able to have a good command of the writing and reading of all the three written dialects of the language: Akuapem, Asante and Fante, understand and appreciate the literature and customs of the speakers of the various dialects of Akan and differentiate between and produce appropriate registers in the language.

Admission Requirements for Languages

WASSCE/SSSCE applicants should have at least a pass in three core subjects: mathematics, English and Integrated Science and three electives, one of which should be a good pass in the chosen language of study; thus Akan, English or French. The total score should be aggregate 24 or better.

B. A. Rural and Community Development/Development Studies

The programme provides an interdisciplinary framework for the understanding of the dynamics of rural stratification and differentiation, with concepts in Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, Human Ecology, Gender Issues, Natural Resources Management, History and Political Science. The student will be required to undertake independent analysis of rural development issues and provide alternative strategies and policies for change.

Admission Requirements for B.A. Rural and Community Development/Development Studies

WASSECE/SSSCE: Applicants should have a pass in three (3) core subjects; Mathematics, English and Integrated Science, and three (3) electives from General Arts, Visual Arts, Science, Business or Accounting disciplines. The total score should be aggregate 24 or better.

BSc. Business Economics

The programme will provide a wide range of courses in Economics necessary for a sound intellectual foundation in the management of all types of organization; to provide analytical techniques and develop the abilities of students to critically analyse and under stand the Economics problems of organizations and businesses. It will also equip students with the capacity to make good decisions in a rapidly changing economic, political, social, and technical environment and to develop entrepreneurs imbued with a sense of discipline who are alive to their responsibilities in the societies they operate in.

Admission Requirements for BSc. Economics

(a) WASSCE/SSSCE: Applicants should have a pass in three core subjects: namely Mathematics, English and Integrated Science and three electives one of which should be a good pass in Elective Mathematics. The total score should be aggregate 24 or better.

The BSc. Environmental and Natural Resources Management

The programme in Environmental and Natural Resources Management aims at deepening understanding of the character of the environment, and of its inherent natural resources as they relate to human livelihoods and survival. It explores the ways the environment and the resources are used. In this quest, it combines theory and practice, and places a refreshing emphasis upon bottom-up participatory methodologies and upon lessons from local resource management practices. The knowledge gained is used to inform policy planning. A graduate in this four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc.) programme is expected to be in a solid position to analyze, plan and positively influence management of the environment and natural resources in very practical ways in a wide range of institutions or establishments.

Admission Requirements for B.Sc. Envir. and Natural Resources Management

WASSCE/SSSCE: Applicants should have a pass in three core subjects; Mathematics, English and Integrated Science, and three electives of the Science and Agricultural disciplines. The total score should be aggregate 24 or better.

B.A. Rural and Community Development/Development Studies

The Programme is multi-disciplinary in its orientation. It draws on insights from Political Science, Environmental Science, Economics, Sociology, Religion and Culture, Agriculture, International and Social Relations, and many others to elucidate a good understanding of problems confronting poor nations and societies in their quest for development. Above all it provides students with opportunity to draw on the understanding so acquired to identify possible solutions to the problems identified. The Programme combines theory with practice as students are attached with development agencies during the long vacation for practical experience to expose them to the realities of the theories being taught.

After completing a course of study in Development Studies, one has various options for career and academic progressions as indicated below:

BSc. Environmental and Natural Resources Management

This programme emphasises both Environmental Issues and Natural Resources Management instead of only one of them as the case is in many other universities.

The programme of studies in Environmental and Natural Resource Management aims at deepening understanding of the character of the environment and of its inherent natural resources as they relate to human livelihoods and survival. BSc. Business Economics

This Programme focuses on the traditional concepts/ theories of economics in micro and macro economics. What makes the Business Economics Programme unique is that in addition to the traditional economics the programme also focuses on major subject areas of Business Administration including Entrepreneurship and Accounting. Thus the programme equips the student in three major subjects essential to the word of business and industry. Obviously, a graduate with such a rich background will be preferred to the one with knowledge in only one of the subject areas.

A graduate in BSc. Business Economics will have versatile background as compared to some one with a degree in traditional Economics; and such a person will be a preferred candidate for employment in:
