Prof. Tapan R. Mohanty is the Chairperson of Centre for Socio-Legal Studies and Associate Professor of Sociology of Law at National Law Institute University at Bhopal, one of the premier law schools of the country. He did doctoral dissertation titled ‘Culture, Development and Entrepreneurship: A Study of Silk Traders of Chanderi’ explored the nuances of entrepreneurial dimensions of a traditional craft among the rural artisans of Madhya Pradesh, a community that consists of rural poor (scheduled castes, low class Muslims and impoverished migrants from tribal belts of Madhya Pradesh). His junior research fellowship produced an important work on sociological aspect of ecology is general and sustainable development in particular. During the last few years he has worked extensively in the areas of globalization, tribal development and culture of consumption besides Sociology of Law. He had four major research projects to his credit on diverse issues like educational management (NUEPA), Bhopal Gas Tragedy (World Bank and MoEF), Engendering Criminal Law (NCW) and Implementation of PCPNDT Act (UNFPA), Rajiv Gandhi Advocates Training Scheme (Ministry of Law, Govt. of India). He has also conducted various training programmes for different category of professionals which includes lawyers, judges, legal officers and executives of private and public sector companies. Notable among them are Executive Training Programmes for law officers of Tehri Hydroelectricity Development Corporation, Judges of Subordinate Judiciary of Madhya Pradesh, Nodal Officers of Department of Health, executives of Vodafone-India etc.
He has more than 30 research articles to his credit published in international and national referred journals viz. Curriculum and Teaching, Economic and Political Weekly, Vikalpa, Sociological Bulletin, Journal of Educational Planning and Administration, Journal of Indian Institute of Public Administration, Bangladesh Journal of Development Studies, Neetisurethi (Sri Lanka), Mainstream to name a few. He has a consistently brilliant academic regards that boasts first class first honours with distinction from Ravenshaw University, UGC National Scholarship, Merit Scholarship from JNU, national award for essay writing from Centre for Civil Society (New Delhi) and UNFPA etc.
He is a recipient of Erasmus-Mundus Fellowship from the European Union and worked on Life Long Education where he focused on the use of ICT on developing learning skills among adults and professionals. One of his earlier works was on impact of media (radio and television) on rural India and communication has been one of his core areas of research. A widely travelled professional he attended World Congress of Sociology at Durban in 2006 and the International Conference on Sociology of Law at Dharamshala in 2011, International Conference on Tribal Development at Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh. He has been invited as keynote speaker and chairperson at various sessions in multiple seminars and conferences spread across the country.
He is the member of State Supervisory Board of Implementation of PCPNDT Act in Madhya Pradesh, a former member of Executive Committee of NLIU, Bhopal and delivered Convener’s address at the Annual Conference of Indian Sociological Society (Cuttack, 2011) He is a life member of Indian Sociological Society, Indian Society of Criminology, Indian Anthropological Association, and member of Research Committee of Sociology of Law of International Sociological Association (Madrid, Spain).
