“This Friday evening lecture is an introduction to the Saturday and Sunday Workshop. In substance, we will be dealing with Civilization defined as a basic script which is enacted in what sociologists call institutions such as sex, food, language etc… It is by studying institutions that we can understand the script of civilizations called cosmologies or world-views. This is indispensable for any cultural communication. In this Friday evening lecture, Galtung will outline the basic thesis of his latest book “A Theory of Civilizations-Overcoming Cultural Violence”. Saturday and Sunday will be dedicated to workshops by Prof. Galtung, Joachim Engel and Naakow Grant-Hayford on practical implications towards a concrete and constructive dialogue between civilizations.”
